Fuhr's story begins in 1976 when he co-launched Kmart, a discount retail venture during the height of apartheid. In a bold departure from the norms of that era, Fuhr appointed black directors and managers, challenging the discriminatory laws that restricted such positions. this did not stop him from his determination to not only imagine but also carve a different future, enabling him to build an organizational culture that can grasp different cultural perspectives.

Establish TB & MDR-TB wards which became centres of excellence despite the lack of resources compared to hospitals in the city, he also worked at various clinics at Taung sub-district, as well as running a private practice he was truly hands-on in the fight against TB and HIV in South Africa with all this insight gained he went on to write a book about how to manage difficult TB cases in a rural hospital.
